About the Principal Optomechanical Engineer

  • You will be leading the expanding mechanical engineering team, developing the next generation of telecom wavelength-selective optical switches (WSSs).
  • The role will cover all stages of product development, from requirements definition through concept generation, detailed design, prototyping and transfer to manufacture.
  • It will also include developing experimental test systems to support the design and qualification of individual components and sub-systems, both optical and mechanical.
  • You will assist with the sustainable growth of the mechanical engineering team, and be responsible for the day-to-day management and professional development of the team.
  • You will further contribute to the generation and capture of intellectual property related to the Group’s optical switching technology.

About You

To be successful, you will:
  • have a strong degree in mechanical engineering or a related subject, and extensive post-graduate experience in mechanical design, whether in industry or academia. A master’s, PhD in mechanical engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous.
  • be an expert in analytical and numerical structural analysis, materials selection, 3D CAD (preferably Solidworks), and designing bespoke components for a variety of fabrication processes, including CNC machining and additive manufacturing.
  • have experience designing in high-performance alloys, polymers and ceramics.
  • be familiar with mechanical systems requiring a high degree of alignment precision, and the athermalisation and mechanical isolation techniques required to maintain these alignments over a range of operating conditions.
  • have experience of transferring mechanically complex products into volume manufacture, and of line management or of mentoring junior colleagues.
  • also have experience with packaging laser-based photonic systems, automated assembly techniques, and micromechanics or MEMS fabrication. Familiarity with audited quality management would also be advantageous.
