About the Development Engineer

The Development Engineer will work as part of the optical development team to support the experimental development of the optical switching technology. This will include designing and running experiments to characterise the performance of individual optical and mechanical components, composite sub-systems and complete optical switches.

Your duties will include:

  • Experimental development of the photonic systems, ranging from component characterisation through sub-assembly alignment to full system optimisation and characterisation.
  • Designing and commissioning the optical, mechanical and software tools required for this experimental programme.
  • Processing, interpreting, and presenting the data resulting from this programme.
  • Supporting the optical, mechanical and software design teams.
  • Other related tasks as assigned.

About You

To be successful you will need:

  • A strong undergraduate degree in physics, engineering or equivalent.
  • Some practical experience with free-space photonic systems. Recent graduates would be suitable for this position.
  • Skills in data capture, analysis and presentation using a variety of tools, including Excel and Python (or equivalent) are essential.
  • Familiarity with the principles of free-space optical design.
  • Experience with fibre-coupled laser systems, or experience with optical or mechanical design, using packages such as Zemax or Solidworks, is advantageous.
